Learn to Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP)
Here at BEWAVE we have been sharing our love for SUP for over 10 years. Our mission is to introduce more people to the water so they can enjoy this amazing sport in a safe way. We only teach small groups, and we use the best quality kit, including the latest inflatable all-round boards and lightweight paddles. The two-hour introductory lesson is based at Barnt Green Sailing Club and will give you the skills and knowledge that you need to get you on your feet and paddling confidently.
The first part of the session will be land-based and will cover the following:
-
SUP origins and a little bit of history
-
Safety
-
Self Rescue
-
Equipment
-
Stance and Technique
The remaining time is spent on the water learning how to paddle on your knees; how to stand up; and how to turn the board, all whilst looking at paddling techniques. There will be plenty of time to have a play on the water and really find your feet – our aim is to send you away addicted!
If you are paddle boarding already, and want to improve your stroke technique, learn to move your feet on the board, improve your turns or learn race techniques, check out our skills and drills sessions on the website or get in touch with your requirements and availability.
Refresher lessons available for those who haven’t been on board for some time or have only had a lesson on holiday and want to learn to paddle in different conditions.
The session costs £40 per person for a group session (min 2 people) and £75 for one-to-one lesson. The maximum group size is 4.
The minimum age for children to take part in SUP lessons is 14 years. A parent or guardian must take part in the lesson with the child or stay within sight on a one-to-one lesson.
Once you have had a lesson with us, and can paddle independently, board hire is available at select times before you purchase your own kit.
When you are ready, we can help with discounts from major brands that will get you on the water with great kit.
FAQs
When will the sessions take place?
SUP lessons can take place on weekends and during the summer evenings (excluding Thursday and Wednesday evenings) and will be based at Barnt Green Sailing Club.
Lessons are mainly set up at your convenience, drop us an email to arrange a lesson or see when the next one is running on our website.
Lessons will take place subject to suitable weather conditions. Lessons will not be cancelled if light rain is forecast, but windy conditions or stormy weather are usually not suitable or enjoyable. Cancelled lessons will be re-scheduled or refunded. Booked lessons may be cancelled by participants with 48 hours’ notice.
Where should we meet?
When you arrive at the gate of Barnt Green Sailing club, head up the drive, when at the top turn left and drive past the keeper’s cottage and you will see the sailing club on your right. Park in the car park where we will meet you.
If this changes we will let you know prior to your lesson as there is an alternative car park at the front gate if it is at a busy time.
What should we wear?
In warmer weather a wetsuit is not necessary, although you can of course wear it if you have one and it may give extra confidence to try more tricky techniques. Otherwise, lightweight, quick-drying sportswear is ideal or board shorts and rash vest (NO cotton or denim!).
Make sure you bring a towel and change of clothes.
For safety enclosed footwear must be worn. Wetsuit boots or water shoes are ideal, or old trainers that you don’t mind getting wet.
There are changing rooms and showers for you to use if you wish, rather than getting changed at your car.
